On 12 July, the FCCA approved an acquisition whereby Fortum Corporation will gain control over Ekokem Corporation.
The Finnish Competition and Consumer Authority has concluded that the acquisition will not significantly impede effective competition in the Finnish market.
Fortum Corporation is an energy-sector group operating in the Nordic and Baltic countries, Russia, Poland and India, producing and selling electricity and district heating. Fortum also develops e-vehicle charging business and renewable energy.
Ekokem Corporation operates in Finland, Sweden and Denmark, specialising in material and waste recycling, final disposal solutions, soil remediation and environmental management services. Ekokem produces electricity and district heating as side products of its main operations.
Fortum and Ekokem have overlapping operations in the areas of energy production, wholesale and the production of district heating. However, Ekokem only has limited operations in these markets.
The FCCA’s decision includes business secrets of the parties involved. The decision can only be published once all confidential information has been removed, which will take approximately two weeks.
